Game changer  and Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon Miss Zoe Barber began working at Nuffield Health’s Vale hospital during the pandemic, as part of the support given to NHS the by independent healthcare sector.  As a result of this, she has recently started work with Nuffield Health in a private capacity, as well as working full time for the NHS at the Princess of Wales Hospital. Alongside a team, including Consultant Radiologist Dr Jane Pollitt, this month she has launched a private one stop breast assessment service at the Nuffield Health Cardiff Bay Hospital.

As well as her work as a breast surgeon, Miss Zoe Barber is a very active researcher and has used her own personal experience to make changes to national guidance from the DVLA. Following the birth of her twins, she suffered an eclamptic seizure and consequently had her driving licence revoked automatically for six months which made life as a new mum, who is also married to a surgeon very tricky. By undertaking a systemic review and meta-analysis of seizure recurrence following eclampsia and presenting this research to the DVLA, national guidance has now been changed. This means that no other eclamptic woman will have her driving licence revoked.

She hold many awards and prizes, including in 2019 the Gold Medal for the best performance in the FRCS (Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons) examination. Miss Barber is widely published in medical journals, including authoring a book.

Miss Barber offers a full range of breast assessment and oncoplastic treatment to both women and men. Commenting on the recent challenging environment, Zoe Barber said, “Throughout the pandemic, we have continued to offer breast surgery clinics to assess people who are concerned about breast changes, taking extra care to protect patients and reduce the risk of COVID-19 exposure and transmission. We have also continued to offer the full range of breast cancer treatments, including operations and chemotherapy. Our colleagues in primary care have offered virtual and, where needed, face-to-face appointments throughout and anyone with concerns about changes in their breast should contact their GP. I am delighted to join Nuffield Health to increase access and options for patients.”

A keen sports person and now mainly a runner, she represented her university in athletics, cross country and cycling and represented GB at the World Duathlon Championships. Additionally, Zoe has worked with an American charity on a Fellowship in LA and now closer to home, with Giving to Pink.
