In less time than it takes to watch a four-part Netflix series, you can leave Cardiff and the Vale and be sitting instead at a writer’s desk overlooking the stunning Tarren mountain range of mid Wales.
The Writers’ Cabin, situated just ten minutes from the vibrant market town of Machynlleth, has been designed for those seeking a self-led creative retreat, and for people wanting to have a break from their everyday lives. The concept is working; within a few months of opening, the Cabin was chosen by The Sunday Times as one of the top seven writer retreats in the UK.

Each guest is offered a complimentary 90-minute private sauna session during their break, as well as a unique bottle of Poetry Pharmacy pills on the theme of ‘Retreat’. Guests have included poets, standup comedians, journalling enthusiasts, bestselling novelists and playwrights. They chose the Cabin to enjoy what Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park has to offer, and to soak up inspiration on long, starlit nights on the Cabin’s veranda.
Author and publishing professional Julia Forster, who runs the retreat, offers week-day guests the optional extra of a one-to-one author coaching session. She says: “The Writers’ Cabin offers everyone an opportunity to recharge their creative batteries and a natural landscape which acts as a balm to soothe the spirits.”

Four Quickfire Questions with Writers’ Cabin host, Julia Forster
Do I need to be a “serious writer” to book?
Not at all! We’ve hosted many non-writers who have come to seek out a quiet corner of Wales, where both beaches and mountains are within a stone’s throw.
How does a typical at the Writers’ Cabin unfold?
Imagine this: slow mornings over strong coffee. Uninterrupted solo writing or reading time. Leisurely walks. An afternoon shopping in independent shops on Machynlleth high street. All rounded off with a private sauna session.

What do guests say they enjoy about the retreat?
They love prioritising their creativity in the Cabin, connecting with nature and the invitation to tune into their inner lives.
How long can I stay? How do I book?
