If you’re looking to make this year’s festive décor extra special now that December is underway, Dobbies Garden Centres has unveiled a DIY guide on how to make a showstopping Christmas doorway that’ll last you throughout the month.
Festive doorscaping is on the rise for 2024, with a recent customer survey from Dobbies finding that almost three quarters (74%) of Brits plan to decorate the outdoor areas of their homes this Christmas. Over half (54%) surveyed say the reason for doing so is to brighten local communities, so Dobbies’ Stylist, Rebecca Stanton, has outlined how people can create a spectacular Christmas doors-cape that’s sure to make neighbourhoods shine bright.
What you’ll need –
– Real-look garland
– Cable ties or floristry wire
– Tension rod
– Secateurs
– Foraged stems and foliage such as Evergreen, Holly cuttings and berries
– Selection of baubles in different sizes
– Real-look or real wreath
– Battery operated outdoor string lights
– Winter bedding plants in pots
How to create a festive doorway –
1. Start by positioning your tension rod in your entranceway at a height you can work with, then wrap your garland around as your base, securing tightly with cable ties (Dobbies’ value Imperial garland pictured)
2. Once you have your base, you can start placing in your foraged stems like Evergreen and Holly cuttings to bulk out your display, alternating colours and textures to create dimension and interest, and securing with either cable ties or floristry wire
3. Once you’re happy with the greenery, begin adding in smaller accessories like berries and baubles. For an impactful look, create clusters with three different sized baubles and use these to fill any gaps, concentrating on the top corner of your display and spreading out as you work towards the end of your garland. Continue adding accessories until you’re happy with how the garland looks.
4. Once you’re happy with the garland, it’s time for the wreath. You can use either a real-look or real wreath from Dobbies as your base, and then personalise it with your foraged stems, cuttings and baubles. Cinnamon sticks are a great addition to wreaths thanks to their fragrance – add these to your display to enjoy a Christmas scented welcome everytime you walk through the door.
5. Once your door is dressed, it’s time to have fun with planted containers and lights. Skimmia plants work well at this time of year to add a burst of winter warmth to doorways, and you can add battery operated string lights to topiary plants for some added festive sparkle. Finally, style your favourite outdoor lights, such as the Black standing reindeer outdoor light or fun novelty outdoor lights beside your display for an added special touch, and admire your spectacular Christmas display.
